My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love this book. It is one of my favorites – it’s the kind of book you read for the hellofit and then you remember it years later and recommend it to all your friends who enjoy sarcastic and slightly dark and cynical humor.

The characters in this book all revolve around one TV station – the shopping channel. This channel has created a couple “star” actors, or sellers, but they each begin to go through a crisis and the way each character unwinds from these situations is extremely entertaining. The quirks that Burroughs adds to the characters are ones you wouldn’t even think about. Peggy is obsessed with her face hairs, Max goes from star host to a perv from accidental penis exposure on air, and everyone just completely unravels. It’s wonderful.

This is also by the same author who wrote the memoirs Running with Scissors, Dry, Possible Side Effects – which are all some of my favorite books as well. This is his only fiction work thus far. Augusten Burroughs is a talented writer, especially when it comes to cynical humor.

Definitely worth the read. Keep in mind, this is satire and a light read. It’s not meant to change your world, and the tone is different than his nonfiction work- so have fun with it.
