Just a Little Crush? More Like Just a Lot of Heat! (Book Review)

Just a Little Crush ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

I recently read Just a Little Crush by Renita Pizzitola and I loved it! This is a new adult romance novel and I read the entire thing on a Saturday. I couldn’t put it down! I’m pretty sure I was in the middle of another book too at the time, but the moment I opened this book I knew I was hooked. Romances are my go-to, and I think the new adult genre is a lot of fun. Reading about twenty-somethings while I’m still a twenty-something is pretty neat.

This is Renita’s debut novel and WOW–what an awesome first novel to launch her writing career.

I loved our Hero and Heroine in this novel. I read a post from Renita that she said she thought of one line and that set the premise for the novel. The line is awesome:

…it took me seven minutes to fall in love with him, and only seven seconds to fall out.

And yes, that really does set the entire story line.

Brinely, a college girl who studies more than parties and is still a virgin bumps into the one guy from high school she never wanted to see again, and yet maybe kind of always longed to. His name is Ryder and he is sexy and hunky and awesome, and protective of Brinely. To him, Brinely has “ruined” him with other girls…no girl has lived up to what he and Brinley shared one moment in highschool.

Without giving you too much away from why the hate/love attraction came to fruition between the two—that line above “It took me seven minutes to fall in love…” just think seven minutes in heaven. But it’s better than you’d imagine (hint: the seven seconds to fall out) and Renita does a wonderful job of weaving in the past with the present and only giving us the details necessary at the moment. She doesn’t overload us with exposition or back story to set it up. It happens very organically.

And just when you think Brinely and Ryder have figured it out and will have their happily ever after…something big goes down and they have to decide if they are better alone or together.

I love the chemistry between the two characters, I love each of the characters on their own and also together, and I love the internal and external conflict Renita piles on. My favorite thing with romance novels are when you hit a point and you think to yourself, “How will they possibly overcome this?” And somehow, they do. And it’s the best. And Renita does this.

This book came out in October 2014, and the second book in the series (although different characters) Just a Little Flirt was just released March 31, 2015. I’ll be downloading my copy after I post this review and I recommend you do too! But of course, be sure to read Just a Little Crush: only available in kindle.
